Connecting Practice and Research
Addressing Challenges Facing Adult Literacy Learners & Practitioners
In the current climate of prescriptive program outcomes and accountability measures adult literacy learners and practitioners face increasing challenges to their teaching and learning relationship. The withdrawal of federal funding has led to the closure of many national and provincial literacy organizations, virtually eliminating networks and repositories of practice-based expertise and learner engagement in policy activism and program decision-making. The redistribution of labour market agreements between federal and provincial governments to a more restrictive Canada Job Grant program has increased barriers for people to get into programs. What does this all mean to those who work and learn in adult literacy education? We’ll hear stories from the field as the starting point to connect practice and research through an active participatory day of dialogue. For researchers, practitioners and learners interested in social justice, participatory democracy, and policy dialogue in relation to adult literacy, this is a great opportunity to explore possibilities for participatory research and community development projects.

Spring 2019 Edition | Friday April 12, 2019
Do you find it a challenge to work with some of your students? Are they struggling to learn and change in the presence or aftermath of violence, neglect, or other personal or intergenerational trauma? In this workshop, we will review the impact of violence and other traumatic events and explore a stance to support students to learn and change.
This workshop is for anyone who supports adults in literacy, basic or essential skills upgrading. Whether your role is a facilitator, instructor, counsellor, administrator, bring your experience, knowledge, questions, and curiosity to strengthen the support you can offer for learning and change.
